The Healing After Facelift Surgery

The procedure for a facelift surgery will normally take about 2 to 4 hours. Usually it is an outpatient procedure but sometimes staying for the night is possible.

Feeling discomfort after the surgery is normal. This soreness can be overcome with over the counter medications or prescription pain medications. You may also encounter swelling at the eyelids area and other facial areas.

Immediately after the surgery, a large fluffy dressing is applied and it is normally removed and probably substituted with an elastic wrap within one day.

Within the first 24 hours of the facelift surgery, many patients are black and blue. They will often have tubes for drainage purposes in place to decrease swelling and to get rid of any surplus blood. There are some cases where the drainage tubes are left in place for a few days.

2 days after the surgery you will be allowed to wash your hair. You are also advised to avoid exhausting activity until the swelling has settled. The swelling may take 4 to 6 weeks to settle. It is however possible that within 2 weeks the swelling should be reduced enough and by then you can take on some social activities. You will likely want to remain to yourself for the first 1 or 2 week after your facelift surgery. After that period you can opt to socialize.

You will be able to show your new face by the seventh weeks. Most cosmetic surgeons will recommend that you have a facelift surgery at least 3 months before attending any important social events.

For a few months after the surgery your skin may feel dry and rough.

For your information, take note that a facelift surgery is intended for folds and creases of laxity and it is in no way intended for improving the look of wrinkles.
